Both tests are four hours long, and both are administered at PSI testing locations. The California exam includes items, 20 of which are not scored. The national exam includes items. In order to sign up for the California exam, your hours of experience must first be approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences. Once that occurs, you are able to take the exam as soon as there is an opening at the test location of your choice. On the other hand, the National MFT Exam is only offered for one week per month, and you must sign up for the exam by the first of the month before the month in which you want to take the exam.
In order to take the national exam, you must first apply for eligibility through the board for the state in which you are seeking licensure. Based on the exam plans, the two tests have slightly different foci, but the same intent: to keep the public safe. The California exam covers your knowledge of clinical evaluation, crisis management, treatment planning, treatment, law, and ethics.
The national exam measures your knowledge of the practice of systemic therapy; assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing; designing and conducting treatment; evaluating ongoing process and terminating treatment; managing crisis situations; and maintaining ethical, legal, and professional standards.
I took the California exam first. In order to study, I used a California exam-prep course and took notes throughout the whole course.
Note: Neither AMFTRB, PTC, nor the member boards can send copies of past examinations to applicants, nor is there a list of recommended books or other materials for use in preparation for the examination. Read a more in-depth discussion of the exam. The Handbook for Candidates is a must-read and should answer most of your questions about the exam process, from your initial application through the scoring and receipt of your results.
This is an opportunity to get a feel for the actual exam questions and your success. The practice exam has questions compared to the on the national exam and is based on the 6 practice domains covered in the national exam. Your scores will be displayed at the completion of the exam and can be retrieved later using your sign-in.
Training programs may purchase blocks of practice exams at reduced fees, and administer the tests themselves. Read more about School Vouchers here. The program, called Test Drive , allows candidates to walk through, on a practice basis, all check-in and testing procedures that occur at the test center on test day. After the jurisdiction has approved the applicant to sit for the national exam, the jurisdiction will email an Approval Code and link it to the PTC online application system.

If you have problems with registration or your purchase, call PTC for assistance at TDC focused on material for the exam and provided strategies on how to take, and pass the exam. I had access to other exam material and felt overwhelmed with the amount of information. Will recommend to take the time to follow the study program, and not deal with more stress.
I used TDC and passed on the first try in 3 and a half hours, only market two questions for review. Super helpful program. Felt so prepared for the exam. The mocks were excellent in preparing you for the actual exam. I knew what to pick according to the strategies that were explained. Passed on my first attempt! Thank you for an amazing tool and giving us exactly what was needed to pass! The program is awesome though. It definitely prepared me. This was a very comprehensive coarse with really good strategies for how to approach the questions.
I like the emphasis on balance, self care, and the way the topics were covered conversationally. I am so relieved I passed and I really thank the coaches for helping me and the coarse for the great grounding. I had 1 month to study and used the TDC. What helped most wast not only learning the information, but learning how to answer the questions, which TDC prepared me for in such a short amount of time. Whether you're studying for 3 months or 1 month, I highly recommend the TDC.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the actual exam felt easier than the mock exams! I think TDC actually over-prepared me for the exam, and I couldn't be more grateful for that! I've recommended TDC to several others already, and I plan to continue recommending it! TDC's study material is top notch and on point to the Board examination. TDC covers all topics and modalities. I felt confident about the material after I was able to really commit to the study guide. Thanks for allowing me to have used the study guide over and over after my failed attempts and seeing me through my success.
This testing platform helped me tremendously!!! TDC was a great study program and extremely comprehensive! I went into the test with so much more information than I actually needed, but I believe it will make me that much better of a clinician.
Lots of assessment questions, but if you listen to all the audios, review your notes and do the mock exams, you will be more than ready. My biggest hurdle was test anxiety and time management, but once I started the actual exam, my nerves were eased because I realized I was fully prepared!
